HartRAO Home > How to get to HartRAO > from Johannesburg East and O R Tambo Airport
From the airport, travel towards Johannesburg on the R24. This later merges with the N12 heading towards Johannesburg.
The N12/R24 then meets the N3 running north-south. Take the N3 exit for Pretoria from the N12/R24. This should loop you round to the left so that you head north on the N3. The next offramp you pass should be Linksfield Road. If so, continue north on the N3.
The N3 turns towards the west and crosses the M1. At this point the N3 is renamed the N1 heading west towards Roodepoort. Continue westwards on the N1.
From the N1, take the Malibongwe / Lanseria Airport / R512 exit and turn right onto the R512, heading towards Lanseria. Cross over the N14/R28 and continue past the Lanseria Airport for a further 18 km, where the R512 meets the road between Pelindaba and Broederstroom at a T-junction.
At the T-junction turn left onto the R512 west to Brits / Broederstroom.
About 2 km after Broederstroom, turn left onto the R400 road signposted to Hartbeeshoek. After 9 km a stream is crossed and a dirt road to Skeerpoort turns off to the right. Ignore this dirt road and proceed for a further 9 km on the tarred road to the SANSA / HartRAO entrance on the right-hand side at the 34 km marker. There are signs "Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory" and "HartRAO" behind the fence to the left of the entrance, and "SANSA" to the right of the entrance.
Once on the HartRAO/SANSA access road, drive 3 km down into the valley. After 1 km you will pass the SANSA's Space Operations Directorate on the right. HartRAO is at the end of a steep descent into the valley.
