The Square Kilometer Array and HartRAO
The Square Kilometer Array (SKA)
is the proposed next generation global radio telescope. Several countries
are bidding to host the core site. Major technology development is also
required to permit its objectives to be achieved. Estimated cost is one
billion US dollars. Site testing and qualification is underway and
technology demonstrators are being designed and built by several
consortiums.
HartRAO staff are part of the team developing the South African bid to host the SKA in Africa,
with the core site located in the semi-desert area of the North Western Cape
Province. Three core site locations identified for further study are shown
in the map above.
