View from the Moon | View from above South Africa |
On the left, looking from the Moon, we would see a circular shadow.
On the right, looking from above South Africa, the shadow would seem stretched out as it is falling on the Earth's surface at an angle.
The penumbra seen here is large, and gets darker as it approaches the small spot 70 km across in the centre where the umbra falls and the eclipse is total. The penumbra gradually fades out as one moves away from the umbra, and it does not have a sharp edge.
